About Kate & Woolly Warm Fuzzies
A friend taught me how to needle-felt ten years ago and I fell in love with the simplicity and quietness of this practically unheard of art. My friend gave me what I needed to get started, including a short lesson, and I made my first chick. When I "sculpt" animals out of soft, springy sheep's wool, I am completely present. If I'm not, I may poke myself with the very sharp, barbed felting needle, but also I like to imagine in my mind's eye who this little creature is going to be; is this going to be a proud flying pig with his nose in the air, or will it be a shy one with gentle eyes? That's why I never get tired of making flocks and herds of the same animals, because each one is truly unique. After years of making my Warm Fuzzies and giving them away as gifts and tucking them into every available nook in my house, a friend told me about our local library's monthly artist showcase. This would be a way for me to show others my miniature menagerie and maybe get some good feedback. Well, the day after I installed my art work at the library I got a phone call from a local art gallery owner who insisted that I should bring whatever sculptures I have available to her shop as soon as possible. She ended up becoming one of my favorite people in the world! Although I loved having my work for sale, it wasn't as profitable as I had hoped. I needed to find a way to sell wholesale, so in March of 2014 my amazing and supportive husband set out to find shops and galleries all over the US that would want my Woolly Warm Fuzzies on their shelves. We looked at hundreds of web sites and sent out my small catalog to only the coolest, snazziest businesses. In only one month, I had over a dozen orders. In less then three weeks I had re-orders coming in from those same shops-JOY! I found my niche! People ask me, "Don't you get sick of making your sculptures all day every day?" and "Doesn't that hurt your hand, poking for hours and hours with your felting needle?" Amazingly, I never get tired of creating these little personalities, knowing that they make people smile. And other than my husband having to massage a kink out of my shoulder once in a while, I don't suffer at all from sculpting. In fact, it gives me so much happiness to know that I have something that I can do for the rest of my life that will bring joy to many people.
